The Sporting Life, an Orvis Store, was a retail venture requiring the design of new interior space and furnishings within an existing building at Mashpee Commons. Prior to renovation, the space had been a bank.
The building rests on an unusual curved foundation, with a curved exterior and windows set back from the façade. Inside, the building had a vault in the center of the space, and low, plastered ceilings.
All spaces, merchandise layout, furniture, and finishes are original JNA design. The walls and cabinetry are made of vertical grain fir to create a warm environment derivative of the cabins and family cottages of fishing and sporting enthusiasts. To maximize the store’s visual display space, new windows were located at the outer edge of the façade. The existing ceiling was demolished, exposing a unique, radiating structure.
